TOPPING OUT CEREMONY

10 March 2009

NEW SIXTH FORM CENTRE TAKES A STEP NEARER TO COMPLETION

A new sixth form and teaching centre at one of Suffolk’s leading schools took a step nearer to completion when it was blessed by the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich as part of the topping out ceremony.

The event at Woodbridge School saw the Right Reverend Nigel Stock climbing a steep ladder to carry out the historic tradition, accompanied by school officials and representatives of the construction company, R G Carter.

The Bishop blessed all those who had and continue to work on the project and those who will work in it from September when it is open for teachers and pupils and he also drove the final rivet into the roof guided by the building team.

The development is part of a £9 million investment which has been phased over three years and includes new science, art and technology facilities at The Abbey, the prep school to Woodbridge and a new design and technology building and expansion of art facilities at the senior school .

Stephen Cole headmaster at Woodbridge School said: “We were delighted to welcome The Bishop to carry out this official duty for us . The new centre is mark of the sign of the governors’ commitment to excellence in education and of the confidence it has in the School.

In line with tradition, a sapling was taken to the top of the building and this will be planted in the school grounds to mark the occasion.
